How is the Digital SAT different?

The Digital SAT is the updated version of the SAT, fully replacing the paper exam in the United States beginning in 2024. It still measures the same core skills in reading, writing, and math, and it continues to use the familiar 400 to 1600scoring scale. What has changed is the format — now taken on a computer through the College Board's Bluebook app.

The shift to digital allows for a shorter, more efficient test experience. The exam uses an adaptive structure that adjusts question difficulty based on your performance — making scores more precise.

What to expect on test day

The Digital SAT combines Reading and Writing into one unified section that focuses on shorter passages and targeted questions. The Math section allows a calculator for the entire duration, which helps streamline problem solving.

The exam uses an adaptive structure: your performance on the first module of each section determines the difficulty of the second. Strong performance in Module 1 leads to more challenging questions in Module 2, while lower performance results in an easier second module.

You must use an approved device — Windows or Mac laptop, Chromebook, or iPad. The exam runs through the College Board's Bluebook app with built-in tools like a calculator, highlighter, and annotation features.

How the Digital SAT is scored

Same 400–1600 scoring scale as the old paper version. No penalty for guessing. Because the test is adaptive, questions in the second module can carry more weight — your raw score is converted to a scaled score based on the difficulty level you reached.

National averages typically fall around the 1050 range; competitive scores for selective schools often begin at 1300 and move into the 1400s or higher.
